The mission of the MIA is to advance cooperation between public, private and academic organisations in support of integrated and sustained marine observation, monitoring and forecasting.
The Alliance strives to ensure that system developers, data and information providers, researchers and end-users are all involved in the development and application of future ocean observation, monitoring and forecasting systems. Through collective involvement and partnership the Alliance seeks to foster societal benefit, promote commercial enterprise and support long-term business sustainability.
In order to achieve this mission the Alliance:
- Identifies and encourages business and research opportunities.
- Aims to increase the value of ocean observation. monitoring and forecasting to society.
- Serves as a forum for private sector input for ocean observation, monitoring and forecasting.
- Facilitates collaboration between business sectors as well as amongst industry, trade associations, government agencies and academic institutions.
- Promotes advocacy at the global, regional, national and local level.
- Provides coordinated input to consultation and review of proposed global, regional and national strategy and policy.
- Facilitates public awareness.
- Produces position papers dealing with topics that affect the sector.
- Undertakes studies of the socio-economic benefits of ocean observation, monitoring and forecasting.
- Promotes and funds research and development.
