The Marine Information Alliance is a partnering of the public and private sector with the objective of realising the societal and business benefits of sustained observation, monitoring and forecasting of the marine environment.
Better understanding and forecasting of regional seas permits more effective management of marine resources, improved protection of life and property in densely populated coastal zones, and the ability to more effectively protect the quality and biodiversity of the coastal environment.
Maritime industries benefit directly in terms of improved offshore safety, improved operational efficiency and optimal utilisation of operational assets.
The oceans are a critical driver of global weather and climate. An ability to understand oceans and seas makes possible improved response to natural hazards, improved accuracy of weather forecasts, seasonal forecasts and future climate projections and more effective management of fisheries, aquaculture, energy and water resources and transportation.
For industry in general this improved understanding translates into better asset management, more effective investment appraisal and better informed long-term strategic planning.
The MIA seeks to ensure that industry plays an effective role in the design and implementation of ocean observation, monitoring and forecasting systems and gains maximum benefit from the information such systems provide.
